What are the drivers for the development of the berries sector? This was the topic of the report presented by Thomas Drahorad at the conference organised by Nova Siri Genetics on 21 March 2024. The report is available for download for readers of Italian Berry.

During the most recent survey of the Strawberry Retail Monitor, carried out by Italian Berry in 7 large-scale retail outlets in Bologna on 19/3/2023, Origin is almost exclusively Italian, with only 2 packages from Spain out of 31 sampled; the 500 g format prevails.

A seminar will be held in Brescia (Italy) that addresses knowledge of the soil and climate characteristics of the area, the choice of cultivars, appropriate agronomic practices, and the use of valuable organic matrices and microorganisms as the key to the success of a modern berry farm.

The Global Blueberry Price Index of the Italian Berry basket surveyed on 18/03/2024 decreased by 0.9% compared to the previous week. The index is composed of 14 global retail brands with product on offer in the survey of 18/03/2024.

Costa Group, a global leader in the development of premium blueberry varieties, has hit the record books for developing and growing the world’s heaviest blueberry, according to the official Guinness World Records. The blueberry was picked on November 13, 2023, at Costa’s berry farm in Corindi.

On the shelves of the large-scale retail trade in Padua, generally low prices were observed for berries, particularly blueberries. It was a proud moment for Italy, as the first blueberry of Italian origin was spotted among the various products.

The grower is regularly faced with the choice of which plant material to buy and for strawberries this choice has to be renewed from year to year, identifying the best genetic programme and the best nurseryman for his needs. The evaluation criteria are numerous.

While strawberries are declining by 1%, after years of expansion the area of the other berries - blueberries, raspberries, currants, gooseberries, blackberries - is also slowing down in Italy. In 2023 at national level, the area under small fruit stands at just over 2,500 hectares, i.e. -2% on 2022.
