The UK berry sector is going through a challenging phase: production costs have risen by 40% over the past four years, while revenues have only increased by 20%. This gap is putting significant pressure on farming businesses.

This situation is outlined in the new report by John Gray, CEO of Angus Soft Fruits, published as part of the Nuffield Farming Scholarship. Supported by the Royal Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland and the Worshipful Company of Fruiterers, the study explores concrete strategies to help growers capture a larger share of the value chain.

Three key areas: genetics, production systems, export

During his study, Gray visited six countries – including the Netherlands, Japan, and Australia – to exchange insights with breeders, growers, and marketers.

In the report, he highlights the potential of next-generation genetic techniques, such as gene editing and marker-assisted selection, which promise higher-yielding and more resilient varieties.

On the production side, Gray points to the Dutch model of high-tech greenhouses: though more expensive to set up, they deliver high yields and can extend the fruiting season. This is seen as a promising option for the UK, particularly if paired with low-cost energy sources.

Finally, the report identifies significant opportunities in the expanding markets of the Middle East and Southeast Asia, where demand for imported fruit is growing and consumers are willing to pay premium prices.

In addition to technology and export strategies, Gray emphasizes the importance of investing in human capital: training and empowering professionals at all levels is essential for building resilient, innovative businesses.
