According to information released by Freshuelva, the association of strawberry producers and exporters in Huelva, the area cultivated with berries for the 2026 season is expected to record an estimated increase of 1% compared to 2025, reaching 12,388 hectares.
These figures, Freshuelva points out, confirm the overall stability of the sector and the consolidation of berries as an agricultural and economic driver for the province of Huelva.
Strawberry situation
Strawberries show a growth of 0.9%, reaching a cultivated area of 6,490 hectares, thus maintaining their role as the leading product. During the transplanting period, rain and wind events affected part of the crops and made it necessary to renew some greenhouse infrastructures.
However, the delay in the vegetative cycle was minimal, and the sector expects that also this year Huelva strawberries will be available on national and European markets during the Christmas holidays.
Raspberries, blackberries and blueberries
The area cultivated with raspberries remains virtually unchanged, at 1,924 hectares, reflecting the stability of production planning. Varietal diversification in fact allows both autumn and spring production. Currently, part of the area is in full harvest, destined for the main European markets.
Blackberries record a 2.4% increase, reaching 172 hectares. This growth is linked to the introduction of new varieties adapted to different production cycles, allowing fruit supply throughout the year and a further strengthening of market presence.
Blueberries consolidate their position as the second most important berry in Huelva, with an increase of 1.5% and a total area of 3,802 hectares. Varietal diversity enables early harvests as early as December, improving competitiveness compared to South American production and also responding to the growing demand from Spanish consumers.
The sector nevertheless highlights the increasing competition from third countries, such as Morocco and Egypt, as well as the significant expansion of cultivated areas in Portugal.
Outlook and sector commitment
Freshuelva emphasizes that the slight increase in overall cultivated area demonstrates the resilience and adaptability of the sector, which continues to focus on varietal innovation, production efficiency and professionalization in order to maintain its leadership in international markets.
Finally, the association reiterates its commitment to working together with member companies and public administrations to ensure sustainability, quality and excellence of Huelva berries, a strategic sector for the provincial economy and a global benchmark in production and export.
