Berries in Brescia retail: high prices and wide assortment across supermarkets – March 2026

7

The berry shelves in Brescia are fairly well stocked despite seasonal scarcity. Chilean blueberries are still abundant in large formats, while the new seasons from Morocco and Spain – penalized by high prices and limited supply – are mainly offered in 125-gram punnets. Raspberries are extremely expensive due to the chronic lack of product: Mexican origin is arriving, quality is good but sales are slowed by price levels.

Blackberries are equally expensive but of excellent standard; currants show the last Italian stocks and the first Chilean arrivals, with high prices at the end of the season. Finally, it should be noted the wide variety of brands available, with supermarkets forced to source from every available supplier.

These are the findings of the Berry Observatory survey conducted today, March 18, 2026, in the urban area of Brescia. In particular, the Berry Observatory visited 18 stores across 18 retail chains belonging to 15 large-scale retail groups: Aldi, Conad, Conad Superstore, Coop, Dpiù, Esselunga, Eurospin, Famila Superstore, In's, Iper Tosano, Ipercoop, Italmark, Lidl, MD, Migross, Penny, Prix and Rossetto.

Assortment

In the berry category, the visited stores offered from a minimum of one to a maximum of six SKUs, with an average of 3.4 SKUs per store.

71% of stores carry raspberries; 100% blueberries; 59% carry blackberries; 18% red currants and 24% offer mixed berry packs (Tris).

Range width

Among the 18 stores visited, none had only one SKU on sale. 6% of stores had one SKU, 59% two or three SKUs, while the remaining 35% of stores offered four or more SKUs.

Quality

Quality refers to product condition, measured in terms of: absence of significant defects; product still sound but not in ideal condition (not fresh, tired, shriveled, dull, without bloom); presence of damaged fruit and juice leakage; presence of spoiled fruit and mold.

The groups with the best quality were Conad, Coop, Esselunga, Eurospin, Italmark, Lidl, Migross, Prix, Supermercati Tosano.
