In the province of Huelva, berry plantings for the 2023/24 campaign are expected to reach 11,243 hectares, marking a 4.75% decline from the previous season, as reported by the Huelvan berry association, Freshuelva. While strawberry acreage is down by 3.1% due to weather challenges during the planting phase, blueberry plantings remain relatively stable, showing a slight increase of 0.5% to 3,610 hectares.

The region's commitment to diversification is evident in the 7.5% growth in blackberry plantings, contrasting with a significant 21.5% decrease in raspberry acreage, primarily attributed to the impact of Storm Bernard. Freshuelva emphasized uncertainties in the new campaign, including drought, rising energy costs, and unpredictable weather.

Despite challenges, the province aims to maintain a year-round presence of Huelvan berries in the market, emphasizing the importance of diversification. The blueberry sector, in particular, is set to gain market share with a diverse range of varieties allowing for December harvesting, aligning with the Christmas holidays.

Freshuelva acknowledged ongoing competition from third countries, especially during the spring months, but highlighted the resilience of the berry industry in Huelva. The 2023/24 campaign faces uncertainties related to drought, escalating input costs, and unpredictable weather conditions, emphasizing the need for adaptive strategies in the berry cultivation sector.
