Blueberry season over 20,000 tonnes for South Africa, but there is a problem in Europe

South African blueberry growers are shifting focus towards Eastern markets while maintaining steady growth in traditional regions. By week 49, exports reached 20,348 tonnes, slightly surpassing last season's 19,500 tonnes.

  • Exports to the EU are down by 16%, but shipments to the UK increased by 26%.
  • The Far East and Southeast Asia saw a 27% year-on-year growth.
  • The Middle East also grew by 9%.

The industry is working to secure improved access to Eastern markets, including Japan, alongside China and India. High demand in Europe and the UK, driven by delays in Peruvian supply, has added pressure on airfreight logistics.

Neighboring Zimbabwe is increasing its output, with a 2023 crop estimate of 5,500 tonnes, less than 20% of South Africa’s production, but poised for rapid growth. Zimbabwe entered the global market in 2017 after experimental plantings began in 2008.
