Switzerland: positive harvest forecasts for berries in summer 2026

The Swiss Fruit Association (SOV) expects a positive Swiss bush berry harvest: 2,411 tonnes of raspberries, 923 tonnes of blueberries, 506 tonnes of blackberries and 303 tonnes of redcurrants are forecast for this year.

With the exception of blackberries, this year’s harvest estimate is higher than last year for all crops. This is also due to the expansion of cultivated areas: compared with the previous year, berry acreage is increasing by 3% for raspberries, blueberries and blackberries, and by 10% for redcurrants.

Harvest already in full swing

The bush berry harvest is already well under way. The main harvest period for raspberries and redcurrants began this week. During this phase, more than 170 tonnes of raspberries and around 50 tonnes of redcurrants are expected each week.

For blueberries, the main harvest period will begin next week, with volumes exceeding 100 tonnes per week. For blackberries, the harvest peak is expected in mid-July, with weekly production of just over 50 tonnes.

Effective protection is needed

Bush berries are sensitive crops. They do not tolerate extreme heat, heavy rain or hail. The extreme weather conditions of recent days have therefore posed challenges for Swiss berry growers.

To ensure a stable supply of high-quality fruit, many berries in Switzerland are now grown under protected conditions, in plastic tunnels or greenhouses. These cultivation systems allow for better harvest planning, higher fruit quality and, at the same time, a reduction in the use of plant protection products, as plants grown under protected conditions are less exposed to diseases and pests.

Short supply chain and greater freshness

According to the statement, those who buy Swiss berries not only support regional producers, but also help protect the environment. Local berries reach consumers freshly harvested, without long transport routes or extended storage times.

In this way, the intense aroma of the berries is preserved and the eating experience is particularly high.
