Fresh strawberries double the value of the shopping basket

18

Fresh strawberries continue to demonstrate their ability to generate value well beyond the fresh produce department. According to Circana data released by the California Strawberry Commission, during the 52 weeks ending 17 May 2026, US consumers who purchased strawberries recorded an average basket value of $104.67, compared with $50.56 for baskets without strawberries.

The difference amounts to $54.11, representing an increase of 107%. In other words, the presence of strawberries is associated with an overall basket value that is more than twice as high.

The data suggest that strawberries may represent not only an important item within the department, but also an effective driver of complementary purchases for retailers. Visibility, strategic placement and targeted promotional activities can therefore help increase the overall value of the shopping basket.
