Berry retail monitor in Trento: crising prices and increasingly empty shelves

15

In the latest appointment with the Myfruit.it Small Fruit Observatory in Trento, two clear elements emerge: rising prices across all references and generally limited availability throughout the entire category. The season is drawing to a close for most products and the transition to new production is proving difficult, resulting in blackberries, raspberries and red currants often being absent from shelves, while blueberries – also in short supply – are mainly offered in smaller pack sizes.

From a brand perspective, the Trento market once again proves to be strongly dominated by local players: the banners monitored mainly offer small fruits from companies based in Trentino Alto Adige, with a decidedly limited presence of national or international brands.

Here is the summary of the new appointment with the Small Fruit Observatory. This week, specifically today, 18 February 2026, the survey was carried out in the urban area of Trento and involved 17 sales points from 16 retail banners belonging to 11 large-scale retail groups. Specifically: Aldi, Conad, Conad Margherita, Coop, Despar, Eurospar, Eurospesa, Eurospin, Famiglia Cooperativa, iperPoli, Lidl, MD, MiniPoli, Orvea, Pam, Poli, Prix.

Assortment

In the small fruit category across the stores visited, there were from a minimum of one to a maximum of five references, with an average of 2.9 references per store.

Among the 17 stores visited, 71% carried raspberries and 100% blueberries; 29% carried blackberries; 18% red currants and 18% mixed berry packs.

Range breadth

18% of the stores carrying small fruits had a single reference on sale; 47% had two or three references, while the remaining 35% had four or more references available.

Quality

Quality refers to product soundness, measured in terms of: absence of significant defects; product sound but in non-ideal condition (not fresh, tired, shrivelled, dull, without bloom); presence of damaged fruit and leakage; presence of spoiled fruit and mould.
