The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) forecasts that Mexican production of blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and strawberries will increase by 4% in 2026, reaching 1.2 million tonnes. This growth will be supported by investments from the Mexican industry in improved varieties, the introduction of modern growing techniques and adjustments to harvest schedules aimed at taking advantage of higher-price windows in international markets.
The largest cultivated area will continue to be devoted to strawberries, which account for 54% of total production.
Significant growth is forecast for blueberries , as Mexican growers increasingly target premium markets and take advantage of the spring window to reduce competition from Peruvian exports in the US market. Mexico is also expected to maintain its position as the leading supplier of fresh berries to the United States in 2026.
Weather conditions and water availability remain key factors for Mexican berry production.
The persistent drought that affected extensive production areas in the north and northwest during 2024 and early 2025 led to tighter irrigation restrictions and increased competition for water resources.
Since June 2025, however, increased rainfall has improved reservoir levels nationwide and, by early 2026, reduced the extent of drought-affected areas, partly easing pressure on water supplies.
Across all berry categories, Mexican growers continue to invest in more efficient irrigation systems, protected cultivation and drought-tolerant varieties, with the aim of mitigating climate and water-related risks and ensuring stable yields.
