The Rubus species are emerging as a promising source of polyphenols and bioactive compounds with nutraceutical and pharmaceutical benefits. However, many edible species within the genus are still underexplored and often undervalued. A recent review provides an overview of the nutritional and bioactive elements of both explored and underexplored species, emphasizing their potential health benefits, value creation, and recent developments.
Currently, economic exploitation of Rubus species is concentrated on a few cultivated varieties, while many wild species remain neglected. Recognizing the economic and nutritional importance of already exploited Rubus species, it becomes imperative to explore the untapped potential of these often overlooked plants. Such an approach would preserve these species from the risk of extinction and contribute to nutritional security and livelihoods for communities with access to them.
An Indian study highlights the importance of understanding the exceptional characteristics of Rubus species as "superfoods" and encourages the promotion and cultivation of these less-explored varieties. By expanding the cultivation and utilization of underexplored Rubus species, their full potential could be unlocked, supporting sustainable nutritional and economic benefits.
