The first Spanish blueberries arrive in Turin's retail trade, joining Chile and Peru

This week's Berry Retail Monitor surveyed the retail stores in Turin.

Blueberries come from Chile and Peru, but Spanish origin is becoming increasingly relevant; prices are competitive, and quality is decent. Packaging sizes include 125, 250, and even 500 grams.

Blackberries originate almost exclusively from Mexico, with high prices.

Raspberries and red currants are the big absentees. Due to this limited product availability, low turnover does not allow for exceptional quality standards, and prices soar.

These findings emerged from the latest Berry Retail Monitor, held March 4, 2025, in the urban area of Turin. The analysis covered 20 retail stores belonging to 15 GDO groups.

The examined retailers include Aldi, Banco Fresco, Bennet, Borello, Carrefour, Carrefour Express, Carrefour Market, Coop, Dpiù, Eurospin, Il Gigante, IN's, Lidl, MD, Mercatò, Pam, Penny, Sigma, Spazio Conad, and U2.

Berries Assortment

The surveyed stores offered between a minimum of 1 and a maximum of 6 product references in the berry category, with an average of 3.3 references per store. The assortment percentages across the 20 stores are as follows:

• Raspberries: 75%
• Blueberries: 100%
• Blackberries: 55%
• Red currants: 20%
• Mixed berry packs: 20%

Product Range

• 10% of the stores with berries in their assortment offer only one reference.
• 45% offer two to three references.
• The remaining 45% display four or more references.

Product Quality

Quality is assessed based on product integrity, measured in terms of:

• Absence of significant defects
• Healthy product but in suboptimal condition (not fresh, wilted, shriveled, dull, lacking bloom)
• Presence of damaged fruits and juice
• Presence of spoiled fruits and mold

The retailers with the best quality products were Aldi, Banco Fresco, and Lidl.

Retail Prices

• Raspberries (20 observations): min. €19.80/kg - max. €35.92/kg - average €27.45/kg
• Blueberries (37 observations): min. €10.96/kg - max. €31.84/kg - average €17.15/kg
• Blackberries (14 observations): min. €23.60/kg - max. €31.92/kg - average €26.89/kg
• Red currants (4 observations): min. €23.84/kg - max. €39.84/kg - average €31.08/kg
• Mixed berries (5 observations): min. €24.33/kg - max. €29.87/kg - average €26.85/kg

Overall total (80 observations): min. €10.96/kg - max. €39.84/kg - average €22.73/kg.

Brands

Berries from a total of 29 brands were identified in the surveyed stores. The brand with the highest average prices was Carrefour Bio, while Alma and Onubafruit offered the lowest average prices for blueberries.

Packaging Formats

62% of the blueberry references are sold in 125-gram packages.
