TrentinBerries: history of berries in Trentino

199

Dino Andreetta, sociologist and passionate author of local history, has recently published an original and unpublished work: TrentinBerries. The book, spanning over 200 pages, tells the story of berry cultivation – or “forest berries” – in Trentino, tracing a path that starts from early experiences in Val dei Mocheni and on the Piné Plateau to the modern production reality led by the Sant’Orsola Cooperative.

“After almost two years of work dedicated to collecting noteworthy data and testimonies – explains the author – my new volume titled TrentinBerries is finally available, curated with the collaboration of some friends, particularly Carlo Mosca, whose family has a long tradition in this field.”

An unprecedented historical account

According to Andreetta, the book represents the first true historical reconstruction of berry cultivation in Trentino, starting from the 1950s and 1960s. The book begins by telling the story of this agricultural phenomenon, which over time has grown into a socially and economically significant sector. Despite its importance, the author points out, “this topic had never before received adequate attention.”

From botany to the table

TrentinBerries delves into the world of cultivated species: strawberries, raspberries, currants, blueberries, and other lesser-known but equally important varieties. Botanical and herbal properties are described, as well as the health and dietary benefits of each crop.

Ample space is also given to agricultural practice, with a technical section designed for those already working in the field or those who wish to approach berry cultivation: practical guides explain phases of planting and care, in an accessible and educational style.

The central role of the Sant’Orsola Cooperative

An entire chapter is dedicated to the Sant’Orsola Cooperative, a symbol of the Trentino supply chain. “With nearly 1,000 members – explains Andreetta – the cooperative has become not only the main organizational structure in the region but also one of the most important at the national level.” For the first time, the book systematically compiles materials – previously scattered – about the birth and development of the cooperative based in Ciré di Pergine.

Berries in the kitchen: recipes and food culture

Concluding the volume is a chapter devoted to gastronomy: from traditional recipes like the Lienz cake to contemporary trends, such as the increasingly popular “hot ice cream” made with berries. The culinary section is enriched with detailed photographs illustrating step-by-step dish preparation.

“The title TrentinBerries – the author emphasizes – is a clear tribute to your newsletter, from which I also drew inspiration during my research. It begins with a local interest and then becomes broader, because this region has been and still is a leader in Italy in the cultivation of forest berries.”

With this volume, Dino Andreetta – already author of numerous studies on the history of the Piné Plateau and contributor to Vita Trentina and Strenna Trentina – offers a valuable contribution to the understanding of an agricultural sector as important as it is little told. TrentinBerries positions itself as a reference work for farmers, scholars, and enthusiasts, offering a comprehensive view that bridges historical memory and current production.
