Sustainable berry growing techniques: new protocols at Macfrut 2025

187

At MACFRUT 2025, Agronomist Dr. Michele Ghezzi will present, as part of the Berry Area event program, an innovative approach to organic and integrated berry cultivation. The presentation will focus on the importance of a careful preliminary site analysis, including soil and water, and the selection of suitable and certified varieties.

A crucial aspect is the choice of cutting-edge organic technical solutions for fertilization and zero-impact pest and disease control methods. The correct use of these solutions promotes healthy plant growth and excellent production results. Ghezzi will analyze the risks of excessive chemical fertilization, which makes it necessary to restore healthy soils rich in organic matter and microorganisms through the use of specific products.

Therefore, the role of agronomists is to develop sustainable protocols based on organic fertilizers, high-quality organic matter (worm humus), activated organic pellets, seaweed-based stimulants, and microorganisms.

Additionally, a basic protocol for blueberries will be presented, including the use of mycorrhizae at planting, fertigation with mycorrhizae or PGPR bacteria at vegetative regrowth, localized fertilization with seaweed and amino acids before and after flowering, and the application of plant extracts to improve fruit quality.

Michele Ghezzi will illustrate the necessary treatments during the vegetative cycle, from mid-September and before the cold season.

These protocols, with the necessary adjustments, can also be applied to raspberries, blackberries, currants, and gooseberries, both in open fields and soilless systems. The use of slow-release organic granular products is also beneficial for farms without fertigation.

In summary, the presentation aims to promote a more sustainable and effective berry cultivation through a conscious agronomic approach and the adoption of innovative fertilization techniques.
