Berries has always been one of the driving categories for market innovations, especially in terms of packaging materials and formats. In this historical period where public opinion and consumer attention is focused on sustainability, packaging is a particularly relevant topic.

In this scenario, full of alternative proposals and qualified solutions, large-scale retailers are moving towards solutions that can enhance their positioning and brand equity strategies. ALDI Italy is the first national retailer to embrace the new international project launched by Plastic Bank Corp. in exclusive collaboration with Carton Pack S.p.A., an Italian company specialising in packaging for the food and fresh produce market.

THE SOCIAL PLASTIC® PROJECT BASICALLY DEALS WITH PLASTIC RECOVERED FROM THE ENVIRONMENT BEFORE IT CAN END UP IN THE SEAS AND OCEANS THROUGH WATERWAYS DURING FLOODS.

It is therefore a response to environmental and social problems where the situation is of the highest emergency.

ALDI Italy's CSR Department assessed the project with particular regard to the value and importance of the contribution it could make by introducing quality products packaged in Social Plastic® in its shops.

The operation involved the selection of strawberries, blueberries and raspberries from the ALDI brand line, which were selected and packaged in Italy.

The main objective of this 'new chain', which took its first steps in the summer of 2020, is to create new value for the sustainability of plastic packaging, starting with the berries category.

"Sustainable plastic packaging", what may seem like an oxymoron to many, actually represents a solution to the problems of recycling, environmental pollution and poverty in certain disadvantaged areas of the world where plastic waste is not managed according to appropriate sorting and disposal programmes. The Social Plastic® project, a certification mark for the controlled supply chain, has two stimulating objectives: to give a completely new and unique value to recycled plastic (rPET) according to circular economy dynamics; to take more incisive action towards environmental sustainability and corporate social commitment.

Carton Pack is currently the first and only European processor toexclusively use SOCIAL PLASTIC® to bring a new social and eco-friendly value to packaging for the fresh produce market.
