Cape Town hosted the IBO Summit 2025, bringing together global blueberry leaders, researchers, and growers. With Table Mountain as the backdrop, the event focused on connecting expertise and shaping the future of the industry. Organised by Berries ZA, the Summit opened with a cultural welcome, emphasising unity and the shared commitment to advancing the blueberry sector.

Insights from regional and global experts

The three-day program featured keynotes, panels, and discussions led by international experts. Ambassador Darci Vetter opened with insights on navigating global trade in uncertain times. Speakers and moderators from South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia highlighted the region’s growing role in global production, driven by innovation, collaboration, and responsible expansion.

Industry leaders noted that global supply is becoming more stable and higher in quality, which is boosting consumer satisfaction and demand. While Peru remains the leading exporter, countries such as Morocco and China are growing rapidly. Traditional producers like the US, Chile, and South Africa are adapting to rising competition through varietal renewal and technological improvements.

Research, technology, and varietal renewal

Panels on genetic innovation, machine harvesting, and future variety development underscored the importance of research and technology. Experts pointed to strategic varietal renewal, market segmentation, advancements in pollination, and sustainability under ESG criteria as essential pillars for competitiveness and long-term growth. South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe aim to position themselves as an export hub for emerging markets like India and China.

A strategic session presented the IBO Strategy 2025/2026, focused on redefining priorities, funding ambitions responsibly, and strengthening the organisation’s leadership in research and data. Speakers highlighted the need to build on current strengths while addressing weaknesses, ensuring the IBO remains a central reference point for the global blueberry industry.

Final reflections and future goals

The Summit concluded with reflections on key industry challenges and opportunities: preventing commoditisation, strengthening unity across the supply chain, improving market access, and promoting consistent quality through efficiency and innovation. Sustainability emerged as the top priority for delegates. The event closed with a gala dinner, celebrating collaboration and the shared mission to deliver better, sweeter, crunchier blueberries and a more united global industry.
