Australia: Berry Good Practice guide launched in NSW to boost sustainable berry farming

25

A new resource is emerging in Australia for berry growers: a strategic document designed to address climate challenges, improve sustainability and strengthen the resilience of the sector.

The Berry Good Practice Guide has been officially launched, a practical manual created to support Australian berry growers in adopting increasingly sustainable, responsible farming practices capable of responding to the impacts of climate change.

The guide is the result of the work carried out by Berries Australia, the industry association representing the entire berry supply chain in the country (blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and strawberries), and was funded through a joint contribution of 1 million dollars (approximately €610,000) from the Australian Federal Government and the Government of New South Wales, under the Storm and Flood Industry Recovery Program.

A key sector for the economy

At the official launch, NSW Recovery Minister and Lismore MP Janelle Saffin highlighted the economic and employment importance of the sector in the region. The blueberry industry alone, for example, has seen its production value grow from 25 million dollars (around €15.2 million) in 2005 to more than 500 million dollars (approximately €305 million) today, with around 80% of production concentrated in Northern NSW.

“Growth brings with it new responsibilities towards consumers, regulators and society,” Minister Saffin explained. “This guide was developed precisely to clearly define what ‘good practice’ means in today’s berry industry.”

Minister for Agriculture and Regional Development Tara Moriarty also stressed that the guide represents not only an opportunity for recovery following recent natural disasters, but also a long-term investment to strengthen the sector’s resilience, which is considered a fundamental economic driver for employment in rural areas of NSW.

What the guide includes

The document provides practical guidance across key areas such as:

  • site selection,
  • agronomic practices and production systems,
  • environmental management,
  • working conditions and social responsibility,
  • engagement with local communities.

According to Andrew Bell, Chief Executive Officer of Berries Australia, the guide aims to provide a shared reference point for the entire industry, while recognising the pioneering role of many growers. “Good practices evolve over time. For this reason, alongside the printed version, we will publish ongoing updates through the online edition.”

The guide will be a valuable tool not only for growers, but also for researchers, local authorities and policy makers seeking a deeper understanding of the sector’s path towards greater sustainability.

An open resource for everyone
