The Australian blueberry industry has evolved rapidly from its first commercial plantings in 1974 into a high-value sector worth $505 million (approx. €310 million) by 2024. Production has expanded dramatically over the past two decades, rising from 2,400 tonnes in 2004 to more than 27,500 tonnes today.
Thanks to geographically diverse growing regions spanning from Queensland to Tasmania, Australia is able to supply domestically grown premium blueberries year-round.
Blueberries have achieved exceptional market penetration in Australia, with around 65% of households purchasing the fruit and spending an average of $51.10 (approx. €31.30) annually. This is likely one of the highest household penetration rates globally, especially notable given that blueberries were virtually unknown in Australia less than 50 years ago.
While the vast majority of production is local, small volumes are imported from New Zealand during periods of low domestic supply.
Genetics and varietal leadership
A key driver of the industry’s success is Australia’s leadership in blueberry genetics and varietal development. Using advanced technology alongside traditional breeding, Australia has developed globally recognised varieties known for their large size, firmness and high sweetness.
Cultivars such as Arana, Eureka Sunrise and Magica are now grown in more than 40 countries, and Australia also holds the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest blueberry.
Global market and exports
Exports are an increasingly important pillar of the industry’s future, with 1,085 tonnes shipped in the year ending June 2024, valued at $26.4 million (approx. €16.20 million). Asian markets dominate export destinations, particularly Hong Kong and Singapore, while new market access to Vietnam marks a significant growth milestone.
Supported by fast logistics, counter-seasonal supply, strict safety standards and advanced traceability systems, Australian blueberries are well positioned to meet rising global demand for premium, sustainable fruit.
