Bloom Fresh recently announced the acquisition of the breeding programme from Inka's Berries , a pioneering blueberry breeding program based in Peru. “This strategic move brings varieties like Abril Blue+® and Alessia Blue+® into the BLOOM FRESH™ family, expanding our innovation portfolio to include blueberries. These no-chill varieties are set to thrive in diverse climates, offering a more sustainable and tasty future for fruit lovers worldwide.”
“Together with Inka's Berries, we’re taking a bold step toward enhancing food security and sustainability, empowering growers, and delighting consumers.”
Bloom Fresh anticipates that these no-chill blueberries will play a key role in global food security initiatives, particularly in warmer climates. The varieties are already established in South America, Europe, and Africa, with significant potential for further market expansion. BLOOM FRESH™ plans to leverage its global presence to accelerate the growth of these blueberries into new regions.
Carlos Gereda Cornejo, Founder and Chairman of Inka’s Berries, highlighted that the program’s no-chill varieties have revolutionized the blueberry industry in Peru and beyond. He expressed that partnering with BLOOM FRESH™ will enhance the program’s global influence, opening up new markets and expanding its reach.
Inka’s Berries breeding program, based in Peru, has focused on creating varieties that do not require chilling, making them adaptable to various growing conditions. The Inka's Berries programme has already produced 30 million seedlings since 2009, currently has an annual capacity of 8 million seedlings, and has over 35 varieties at an advanced stage of selection.
Cindy van Rijswick (Rabobank analyst) commented: “The blueberry breeding space is getting increasingly competitive. BLOOM FRESH, one of the leading global table grape breeders is now also diversifying into the berry space. In the last few years we already saw vegetable breeders entering the space next to specialised berry breeders and universities. As the blueberry market continues to grow, it is an attractive market for many, so who's next?”
