FEM: blueberry focus to rediscover diversity and cultivate the future

44

The Edmund Mach Foundation (FEM) will take part in the Berry Area program at Macfrut (Rimini, 6–8 May 2025) with a presentation on the most recent research findings on blueberries.

FEM integrates advanced research, technology transfer, and consulting in the berry crop sector: activities include crop protection, such as biological control of Drosophila suzukii through releases of Ganaspis kimorum, and integrated pest management for pests like the strawberry blossom weevil and the blackberry gall mite, as well as innovative agronomy (alternative substrates, techniques to improve fruit quality and shelf life).

The specific focus on blueberries presented at the Berry Area uses a cutting-edge multidisciplinary approach. Morphophysiological, biochemical and multi-omic analyses, combined with high-throughput technologies, explore the wide genetic and phenotypic diversity. The goal is twofold: to guide the selection of varieties more resilient to climatic and environmental stress while enhancing the fruit's organoleptic and nutritional quality, optimizing its shelf life and distribution.

Innovation and diversity in blueberries

Studies on diverse genetic material (segregating populations and germplasm collections), evaluated during harvest and post-harvest, have made it possible to map key metabolic processes related to ripening, shelf life, and stress response. These results strengthen scientific progress and lay the foundation for a concrete transformation of the blueberry supply chain.

The ability to select superior genotypes, suited to specific contexts and capable of maintaining high qualitative and postharvest performance, opens up promising scenarios. The aim is a more sustainable and resilient agriculture that benefits producers, processors, and consumers while reducing waste and environmental impact.
