Modena: berry prices rise, redcurrants remain at low levels

186

In Modena, prices for all references are rising, with the exception of redcurrants, which remain very low.

The main origins of blueberries are Peru and Poland, the latter approaching the end of its season. For raspberries and blackberries, Italian production is ending, leaving room for imports: blackberries from Mexico are increasingly common.

The prevailing brands are the usual (two) well-known ones, but there are also secondary players, making the market more diverse. Rotation is generally moderate, with product handled in the last days of the previous week.

Here is a brief summary of the findings from yesterday, September 29, 2025, by the Small Fruits Observatory in the urban area of Modena, which covered 15 stores from 15 banners belonging to 12 retail groups of the Large-Scale Retail Trade (GDO). The observed retailers were: Aldi, Conad, Coop, Dpiù, Esselunga, Eurospar, Eurospin, Extra Coop, IN's, IperFamila, IperRossetto, Lidl, MD, Spazio Conad, U2.

Assortment

The stores visited had between a minimum of two and a maximum of six references, with an average of 3.9 references per store. Among the 15 stores visited, 93% offered raspberries, 100% blueberries, 73% blackberries, 33% redcurrants, and 33% offered mixed packs.

Product Range

40% of stores carried at least two or three references, while the remaining 60% offered four or more references.

Quality

Quality refers to product condition, measured by: absence of major defects; healthy but suboptimal product (not fresh, wilted, dull, lacking bloom); presence of damaged fruit and juice leakage; presence of spoiled fruit and mold.

The groups with the best quality were Aldi, Conad, Esselunga, Lidl, Selex.
