Blueberry availability on shelves continues to decline, while prices keep rising. This is the picture that emerged in Piacenza from yesterday’s survey, 3 November 2026, by myfruit.it’s Berry Observatory: shelf space is shrinking, while the number of brands is increasing, with as many as three or four brands for the same product line.
Large blueberry packs have almost disappeared. 125-gram packs predominate, while 250- and 300-gram packs are in limited supply. The average price of blueberries stands at €19.75/kg.
Shelf space is also shrinking for raspberries and blackberries, which remain in very limited supply and are expensive: their average prices were €21.98 and €24.36/kg, respectively. Strawberries were almost entirely absent, available only in a few stores and at very high prices.
Despite limited supply, the lots were fresh and quality was generally good across all products.
These are the main findings from the survey conducted yesterday in the urban area of Piacenza, Italy. It covered 16 stores from 16 retail banners belonging to 13 groups in the large-scale retail sector.
The survey recorded the product ranges available at stores operated by the following retail banners: Aldi, Alì, Conad Superstore, Coop, Dpiù, Esselunga, Eurospin, Galassia, Gulliver, Il Gigante, In's, Ipercoop, Lidl, MD and Penny. At the time of the visit, Basko did not stock berries.
Product range
The stores surveyed carried between 1 and 6 berry product lines, with an average of 3.3 product lines per store.
Among the 15 stores that stocked berries, 73% carried raspberries, 100% carried blueberries, 40% carried blackberries, 27% carried redcurrants, 7% carried a mix and 20% carried a trio pack.
Range breadth
13% of stores stocking berries had just one product line for sale; 33% had 2 or 3 product lines, while the remaining 54% had 4 or more.
Quality
Quality refers to product condition, assessed in terms of: absence of significant defects; sound product but in less-than-ideal condition (not fresh, tired, shrivelled, dull or lacking bloom); presence of damaged fruit and juice; and presence of spoiled fruit and mould.
The groups with the best quality were Aldi, Alì Supermercati, Eurospin, Gulliver, Lidl and MD.
