Infia packaging: the international network as a strength

155

From Romagna to the entire world: this, in just a few words, is the story of Infia, a company specializing in plastic packaging solutions for the fruit and vegetable sector, which will be present at the Berry Area during Macfrut 2025.

The company has two production plants, one in Italy and one in Spain, employing over 400 people in total. From these locations, its products, including those dedicated to berries, are distributed to over 80 countries. Today, Infia is part of KP, a multinational company with a global presence.

A Strategic International Network

One of the company's strengths is precisely the international network it has built over the decades. "We can ensure that various fruit and vegetable products such as blueberries and raspberries from Chile, Peru, Mexico, India, South Africa, and Morocco reach European retail chains in the same packaging. This widespread distribution also allows us to offer a top-level service," explains Sales Manager Matteo Camillini.

Berries have always played a key role in Infia's history. The company has been active in the sector since the 1950s. "We are confident that we are not being presumptuous when we say that we are the benchmark in the industry. Along with the experience gained over the years, we offer a wide range of solutions and technical innovations we have developed."

Innovation and Sustainability

Among these is, for example, lateral ventilation, which reduces pre-cooling time by up to 25%, offering both economic and quality benefits.

New products are also on the way: packaging solutions currently widely used in the American continent will be introduced, as well as options designed for the snack sector, making it easy to enjoy a healthy and convenient snack on the go.

Throughout its history, Infia has tested various materials, from early wooden baskets to today's recycled and reusable plastic. "Today, the best packaging in terms of lower environmental impact, health safety, performance, automation, food safety, and cost remains R-PET trays."

A Concrete Commitment to the Environment

For Infia, recycled plastic is a tool to ensure high standards while also reducing food waste, the primary generator of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.

With this in mind, the company has conducted research and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) studies, a systematic analytical methodology that evaluates the environmental footprint of a product throughout its entire life cycle.

"Additionally, we develop EPDs (Environmental Product Declarations) to explain that the choice of the correct packaging should be based on scientific and measurable data, not impulsive decisions."

Thus, sustainability, not greenwashing: "We have always been mindful—not just in recent years when the term is overused—of the efficient and respectful use of resources, raw materials, and human labor, all with the goal of preserving the environment we live in."

The Future of Packaging

Infia emphasizes that currently, there are no more sustainable solutions than recycled plastic. "In the future, with technological advancements, things might change. Infia is constantly searching for solutions to further reduce packaging impact while maintaining a focus on both economic sustainability and product preservation."

A fundamental aspect is the proper management of end-of-life packaging. "To design eco-sustainable packaging, it is essential to understand what happens at the end of its life and at the start of a new one," explains Camillini.

Hence, targeted actions have been introduced to reduce CO2 footprints through the recovery of used trays to create new ones.

One example is the Tray2Tray circular economy project, which designs packaging specifically for recycling. "Creating packaging," he emphasizes, "must take into account how it will be used and all the processes it will undergo, from production to disposal and recycling."

Strategies and the Global Market

Key aspects of the company's strategy include shelf life and food safety. "These are two essential drivers that significantly impact our technical choices during production and strategic decisions during commercialization. Considering that, depending on the season, our shelves feature products from all over the world, we can easily see their importance."

But packaging is also a crucial element in communication. How can this need be balanced with functionality? For Infia, there are various possibilities: from printing the logo on the lid or side of the basket to pre-applying adhesive labels or barcodes during the production of trays or lids. Another option is ultrasonic sleeve application, which, being mono-material, is easier to dispose of. "We are the only ones in the industry capable of printing directly on the side with ultra-high-definition printing, with no color limitations."

The results achieved in 2024 were satisfactory despite the rising raw material costs, a trend that continues in early 2025. The desire to increase recycling percentages sometimes reduces material availability, leading to higher prices. "However, we remain confident that, as in the past, we will manage these challenging transitions successfully."

Exports play a crucial role now and will continue to do so in the future, consistently exceeding 80% of sales for decades. "We will not stop: we aim to continue growing by seizing the opportunities and challenges that the global fruit and vegetable market offers."
