Storms hit Huelva strawberries: production halved and longer 2025/26 season planned in Spain

The strawberry season in the province of Huelva could be extended to compensate for the heavy losses caused by recent storms, which reduced production by around 50%.

Production sharply down

According to Europa Press, the Price and Market Observatory of the Regional Government of Andalusia reported that, in a normal season, about 20% of total production would have been harvested by this point.

This year, however, the progress of the season is very different due to unfavourable weather conditions.

Data also show that from the beginning of the season through week 6, sales volumes are 38% lower for strawberries and 35% lower for raspberries compared with the 2024/25 season.

Quality improving and prices holding firm

The improvement in weather conditions in recent weeks – with the end of the rains and rising temperatures – has supported a recovery in production and a significant improvement in berry quality.

Meanwhile, with the arrival of the first shipments of Spanish strawberries in Germany, prices are higher than during the same period last season, partly due to the lower availability of product.

Possible extension of the season

To recover at least part of the initial losses, growers are considering extending the 2025/26 season, relying on a more favourable second part of the campaign from a climatic perspective.
