Patricio Brevis Acuña, a U.S. breeder, horticulturist and agricultural scientist, outlined in a brief research paper the trends in intellectual property registrations of strawberry varieties globally, looking at the decade from 2009 to 2019.
"The purpose of this post wasto illustrate the trends in strawberry intellectual property registrations over the past decade (2009-2019). The source of the information was the UPOV database containing plant breeding rights (PBR) and plant patent (PLP) registrations."
"In the past decade, 547 strawberry varieties unique to PBR/PLP have been registered worldwide. Among them, the most commercialized were:
"Strawberry variety registrations belonged to 96 title holders. The most important organizations based on the total number of varieties are as follows:
"Strawberry varieties have been registered in 27 countries plus the European Union. The number of varieties by country or region is shown below."
"Finally, during the period under consideration, the average number of varieties registered was about 55 per year. The figure below shows how this number fluctuates widely from year to year, peaking in 2017."
