Designing a blueberry planting correctly: mistakes to avoid according to Marco Butera

15

During Macfrut 2025, agronomist Marco Butera – international consultant and founder of Better Berries – shared the most common issues observed in blueberry plantations worldwide, based on firsthand experience.

To launch a solid project, according to Butera, it is essential to start with a strategic analysis: understanding the future quality standards, evaluating market trends, competitors, and conducting a SWOT analysis to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.

A central aspect is adapting to climate change. Data from the NASA MERRA-2 model predicts that between 2030 and 2050, maximum temperatures will rise (+1.2°C by 2030), precipitation will decrease (−9/11%), and winter chill hours will drop (−9/15%). This will accelerate phenological cycles and increase water stress. Traditional varieties like Duke, which require up to 800 chill hours, will become unsuitable in many southern areas.

Another critical point is water quality: blueberries need water with low salinity and low bicarbonate content, yet water sources are increasingly inadequate. Installing reverse osmosis systems, although effective, involves high costs.

Butera concluded by listing a series of recurring mistakes to avoid:

  • Poor drainage and waterlogging,

  • Inappropriate pot choice, which can cause root stress,

  • Excessive planting density,

  • Improper use of shading screens, which can alter vegetative growth and flowering.

The key, he concluded, is to design with future scenarios and the specific needs of the crop in mind.
