Origen: una nuova era per Camposol

On the opening day of Fruit Logistica in Berlin, Peruvian giant Camposol — a dominant player in the global blueberry export market — officially unveiled ORIGEN, its first-ever genetics improvement program. This marks a strategic milestone for the company, which has spent over three decades establishing itself as a leader in the blueberry value chain.

“ORIGEN was born with a global vision: we aim to raise the quality bar across the industry and promote sustainability throughout the entire value chain,” stated CEO Ricardo Naranjo.

A decade of research shaping the future

The name ORIGEN — Spanish for "origin" — underscores the intent to innovate from the ground up. The program is the result of over ten years of research and development in Camposol’s fields, during which the company identified unique varieties with strong potential for specific markets.

“We realized we had a truly disruptive product,” Naranjo explained. “After thorough strategic planning, we chose to turn this advantage into what today is ORIGEN.”

The roadmap is already clear: by 2026, the company plans to plant around 2,000 acres (circa 800 ettari), aiming to double that area within two years. Simultaneously, Camposol will open its fields to other producers, allowing them to see its proprietary varieties firsthand.

A fully integrated model: from genetics to consumer

For Camposol, developing proprietary genetics is a natural evolution of its already vertically integrated business model — from farming to distribution. With ORIGEN, the company closes the loop by building a single-origin system entirely rooted in Peruvian soil.

“Other companies, tied to external breeding houses, must rely on multiple origins to meet market demands,” Naranjo pointed out. “But we can guarantee unmatched production consistency thanks to a single origin and geographic location.”

This strategy not only improves product uniformity but also enhances sustainability and competitiveness. As Federico Maggio, Senior Business Unit Manager, confirmed: “Having our own varieties eliminates licensing costs and accelerates technology transfer to the market.”

Sol One and Maia Blue: the first fruits of ORIGEN

Alongside the official launch, Camposol also introduced the first two blueberry varieties developed under ORIGEN: Sol One (BLUECSOL 11) and Maia Blue (BLUECSOL 3).

Sol One stands out for its high yield, firm and juicy texture, and excellent visual quality — a reliable and consistent variety tailored for export.

Maia Blue, on the other hand, features a smooth, glossy skin and a balanced texture, offering strong visual appeal. “These varieties are built to meet the logistical demands of high-end markets — where it takes 60 days to reach the consumer’s table,” Maggio explained.

Currently, two million plants are already in the ground, with a target of eight million within the next 18 months. “Our main clients are increasingly asking us to scale these programs,” Maggio concluded. “And we’re ready to deliver with innovation.”

Looking ahead: genetics and consumer value

Camposol’s vision is crystal clear: to turn blueberries into a premium product, leveraging varieties developed around five key pillars: flavor, resilience, consistency, visual appeal, and productivity.

In a global market where quality and sustainability matter more than ever, ORIGEN could become a new benchmark for Peruvian exports — and a model for the entire berry industry.
