Andalusia emerges as Europe's second top blueberry producer after Poland: growth and export trends

28

Andalusia (Spain) has become one of the main blueberry production hubs in Europe, accounting for around 32% of the total EU output. This positions Spain as the second-largest producer in the Union, just behind Poland with 33.7%. Most of the Andalusian production is concentrated in the province of Huelva, which alone contributes over 94% of Spain’s national blueberry yield.

In the 2024/25 season, Andalusia is estimated to have produced 66,600 tonnes of blueberries, marking a 16.3% increase compared to the previous year. This growth is driven by an expansion in cultivated land, which reached 4,700 hectares, and improved yields, averaging 14.8 tonnes per hectare. This comes after several seasons of high production volatility.

Production and export dynamics

Integrated production methods are used for 75.3% of Huelva's blueberries, with 19.2% certified as organic. Spain, along with the Netherlands, is among the EU’s main exporters of fresh blueberries. Andalusia plays a crucial role in supplying the European market, especially during the seasonal peak months, contributing around 11% to global blueberry exports.

Interestingly, Andalusia exports more blueberries than it produces, by supplementing local supply with imports from Morocco. This highlights the region’s strategic importance as a commercial and logistics hub for blueberries in Southern Europe, reinforcing its position as a key player in the EU agri-food sector.
