Post-holiday effect: falling prices and limited volumes in Bologna

The survey was conducted on 09/01/2024 in the area of Bologna on 21 shops owned by 20 retailers belonging to 12 retailing groups.

The full berry range of the following retailers has been surveyed: Aldi, Carrefour, Carrefour Express, Carrefour Market, Conad City, Conad Superstore, COOP, CRAI, Despar, Dpiù, Esselunga, Eurospar, Eurospin, IN's, inCOOP, Ipercoop, Lidl, PAM, PAM Local, Sigma.


ASSORTMENT

In the berry category in the shops visited there were a minimum of 1 and a maximum of 6 SKUs, with an average of 3.3 SKUs per shop.

In the 21 shops visited where an assortment of small fruit was present 

86% have in assortment Raspberries

90% have in assortment blueberries

57% have in assortment Blackberries

38% have in assortment Redcurrants

24% have in assortment Three-pack

RANGE

14% of the stores with berries in the SKUs have only one reference on sale.

43% of the stores with berries in the SKUs have 2 or 3 references on sale.

43% of the stores with berries in the SKUs have 4 or more references on sale.

QUALITY

The retailers with the best quality were Aldi, Coop, Despar Italia, Esselunga, Lidl, Selex, Sigma.

SELLING PRICES

Raspberries (24 observations): min. € 17.59/kg, max. € 31.84/kg, average € 24.97/kg.

Blueberries (25 observations): min. € 11,96/kg, max. € 28,4/kg, average € 21,62/kg

Blackberries (14 observations): min. € 19,92/kg, max. € 31,92/kg, average € 26,66/kg.

Redcurrants (9 observations): min. € 15.84/kg, max. € 29.44/kg, average € 23.69/kg

Three-packs (8 observations): min. € 16,95/kg, max. € 29,87/kg, average € 24,2/kg.

Grand total (80 observations): min. € 11.96/kg, max. € 31.92/kg, average € 24/kg.

BRAND

The stores visited featured berries from a total of 20 brands.

The brand with the highest average prices in the category was Jolife.

The brand with the lowest average prices for blueberries was Peviani, followed by Camposol.

PACKAGING

84% of the SKUs detected in the blueberry product are sold in packages with a net weight of 125g, but other formats beyond 125g were also found: 170g, 250g and 300g.
