The survey conducted by the Osservatorio Piccoli Frutti took place this week on 08/07/2024 in the urban area of Brescia (Italy) and covered 17 points of sale from 17 chains belonging to 15 large retail groups.
The assortments of the points of sale of the following chains were recorded: Aldi, Carrefour Market, Conad Superstore, Coop, Dpiù, Esselunga, Eurospin, Famila Superstore, In's, Ipercoop, Italmark, Lidl, MD, Migross, Penny, Prix, Rossetto.
As for supply, the products on the shelves are available, with some exceptions due to sporadic stock shortages. The quality of the berries is very variable: alongside batches of good quality products, there are also unsatisfactory batches. This situation affects blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, and red currants.
The prices of blueberries are currently low, while those of raspberries are quite high. As for blackberries, the production is recent, with batches dating back to the last four or five days. However, even among these fresher batches, there are quality problems.
Assortment
In the berries category, the visited points of sale had from a minimum of 1 to a maximum of 9 references, with an average of 4.1 references per point of sale.
In the 17 points of sale visited where a berries assortment was present:
- 94% have Raspberries
- 88% have Blueberries
- 65% have Blackberries
- 47% have Red Currants
- 29% have Mix
Range Width
- 6% of the points of sale with berries in the assortment have a single reference for sale.
- 35% of the points of sale with berries in the assortment have 2 or 3 references for sale.
- 59% of the points of sale with berries in the assortment have 4 or more references for sale.
Quality
The group with the best quality was Lidl.

- Raspberries (22 surveys): min. €8.72/kg, max. €23.92/kg, average €21.01/kg.
- Blueberries (35 surveys): min. €9.97/kg, max. €24.8/kg, average €14.99/kg.
- Blackberries (14 surveys): min. €11.84/kg, max. €17.95/kg, average €15.04/kg.
- Red Currants (9 surveys): min. €15.84/kg, max. €31.92/kg, average €22.83/kg.
- Mix (5 surveys): min. €19.87/kg, max. €25.2/kg, average €20.93/kg.

The brand with the highest average prices in the category was Delizie.
The brand with the lowest average prices for blueberries was Sunberry, followed by Ponso.
Packaging
54% of the references surveyed in the blueberry product are sold in packages with a net weight of 125g.
