The Interprofessional Association of Strawberry and Red Fruits of Andalusia, Interfresa, has initiated the steps for the creation and annual celebration of World Red Fruits Day. Today, 12 April 2021, Interfresa celebrates for the first time the World Day of Red Fruits. Thus, the Interprofessional Strawberry and Red Fruits of Andalusia has launched this initiative to highlight the nutritional properties of these fruits and their many benefits.
With this action Interfresa, with the collaboration of the College of Pharmacists of Huelva, wants to make more visible all the benefits that the daily intake of berries brings to health and disease prevention, as demonstrated by several scientific studies.
This initiative is justified by the strength that scientific studies are taking that support the many nutritional properties of strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries. As a starting point for this project, Interfresa will celebrate the "Día Mundial de los Frutos Rojos" on Monday, April 12 with the launch of a campaign to promote the health values of these fruits.
For the official formalisation of World Soft Fruit Day, the interprofession has already asked the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food to take the relevant actions before the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) to make World Soft Fruit Day a fixed date in the calendar from nowon.
The first step will be to make visible this Monday 12 April the first celebration of World Red Berry Day with a campaign in social networks and the media. Thus, it will focus on letting the Spanish population know the importance of consuming berries every day, as they are the most complete fruits from the point of view of healthy nutrition and are essential to strengthen our bodies and prevent many diseases within a lifestyle that follows the guidelines for the care of our bodies.
So an essential aspect of this campaign was to have the scientific advice of one of the greatest international specialists in nutrition, sports medicine and endocrinology, Dr Antonio Escribano Zafra. In fact, some of his works are focused on making all these properties of red fruits known, the consumption of these fruits being at the top of his recommendations and advice to take care of our health through a good diet.
The campaign began on 7 April, to coincide with World Health Day, and will have its most intense days from Monday 12 April with actions to spread the word about the properties of berries, their health benefits and the possibilities they also offer in terms of gastronomy. For this reason, the campaign has as its slogan the textual and graphic combination "Con + Salud", equivalent to "Con-suma-Salud".
Among other actions, farmers will deliver packages of strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries to several pharmacies to distribute to people who come to pick up their medicines.
Given the current pandemic situation, the Interfresa campaign could not focus on actions to promote direct participation of citizens and direct contact with soft fruits. For this reason, it opted for a strong presence in social networks and the media, with the participation of a series of testimonials promoting a healthy lifestyle in their daily activities. These spokespersons are science popularizer, Doctor of Pharmacy and Nutrition graduate Marián García, better known as 'Boticaria García'; chef and gastronomic communicator Daniel del Toro; and actress, presenter and comedian Silvia Abril.
