PRESS RELEASE
Nova Siri Genetics (NSG) has concluded its participation in Macfrut, held in Rimini from 21 to 23 April, confirming the Italian breeding company as an international point of reference in varietal innovation for strawberries and berries.
For the second consecutive year, NSG was present in the Berry Area, a highly specialized setting that encouraged direct dialogue with the sector’s leading operators. “The event,” explains Nicola Tufaro, breeder at the company, “allowed us not only to present the company’s breeding program, but also to explore, through meetings, discussions and themed events, the main challenges and evolving dynamics of the sector at global level, with the innovation- and sustainability-oriented vision that sets us apart.”

The strawberry varieties belonging to NSG’s breeding program are widely grown across the Mediterranean basin, an area that once again confirms its central role in strawberry production during the winter and spring months. The research carried out by the Italian breeding company focuses on the development of more resilient and high-performing cultivars, capable of adapting to variable climatic and soil conditions and offering greater tolerance to the main plant diseases.
“The new NSG strawberry varieties,” Tufaro continues, “ensure greater production stability and continuity, while reducing the use of chemical inputs and improving crop sustainability. These characteristics help bridge the gap between strawberry supply and demand recorded in the first months of the year in the Mediterranean basin. This imbalance affects supply continuity and the competitiveness of the entire sector.”
Fruit organoleptic quality and shelf-life also remain central to the breeding work, as increasingly decisive factors for the market.

Among the varietal innovations presented at the trade fair, particular interest was generated by the new cultivar NSG 48 – Elyson®, intended for the super-premium segment thanks to its excellent agronomic and organoleptic characteristics. This strawberry stands out for its uniform bright red color and persistent sweetness and aroma, together with high plant vigor and high productivity.
The variety has already received positive feedback both in field trials and in commercial evaluations carried out in the main Italian wholesale fruit and vegetable markets.
In addition, the Rossetta® strawberry — the brand associated with the NSG 465 variety — was featured during the happy hour organized at the Berry Bar, where guests were able to taste dedicated cocktails, further enhancing the product’s distinctive characteristics in an informal networking and relationship-building setting.
