In Florence, Eurospin is pushing blueberries 500g at Eur 3.99

In Florence prices are generally fair for raspberries and blueberries, with blackberries still being the most expensive (albeit slightly decreasing). Most formats are 125 grams, but for blueberries, 250 and 500-gram promotional packs are also available.
Blueberries come from Peru, raspberries from Morocco, Portugal, and Italy, while blackberries are exclusively from Mexico.

Production batches are fresh, indicating good fruit rotation, and the quality is generally decent across all references. This is the key summary of the Berry Retail Monitor conducted January 14, 2025, in Florence.

Supermarkets Visited

The survey covered 15 stores belonging to 10 organized retail groups (GDO). Specifically the stores included: Carrefour Express, Carrefour Market, Conad City, Conad Superstore, Coop, Dpiù, Esselunga, Eurospin, IN's, Ipercoop, Lidl, Pam, PAM Local, Penny.

Berries were not available at Naturasì during the visits.

Product Range

In the visited stores, the number of references ranged from a minimum of 1 to a maximum of 7, with an average of 3.1 references per store.

In the 14 stores where berries were available, 79% stocked raspberries; 100% stocked blueberries; 57% had blackberries; 36% offered red currants, and 14% had Tris (mixed berries).

  • 14% of stores had only one reference on sale.
  • 43% offered two or three references.
  • The remaining 43% had four or more references.

Quality

Quality refers to the product's condition, evaluated in terms of:

  • Absence of major defects.
  • Healthy products, albeit not in ideal condition (e.g., not fresh, wilted, shriveled, dull, or without bloom).
  • Presence of damaged fruits and juice.
  • Presence of spoiled fruits and mold.

The groups with the best quality were Coop, Lidl, Rewe, and Selex.

Selling Prices

  • Raspberries (15 observations): average €21.69/kg (min. €15.92/kg – max. €27.84/kg).
  • Blueberries (18 observations): average €15.19/kg (min. €7.98/kg – max. €28.00/kg).
  • Blackberries (9 observations): average €27.75/kg (min. €23.84/kg – max. €32.00/kg).
  • Red Currants (5 observations): average €28.88/kg (min. €26.00/kg – max. €31.84/kg).
  • Tris (Mixed Berries) (2 observations): average €15.03/kg (min. €13.30/kg – max. €16.75/kg).

Overall Total (49 observations): average €20.88/kg (min. €7.98/kg – max. €32.00/kg).

Brands and Prices

The visited stores had 16 different brands on offer. The brand with the highest average prices in the category was Natura Matura. The brand with the lowest average prices for blueberries was Sweggie, followed by Camposol.

Packaging

50% of the observed blueberry references were sold in net weight packs of 125 grams.
