BelOrta marks the start of the local blueberry campaign, with the first Belgian blueberries sold of the season.

The first Belgian blueberries of the season were sold at the BelOrta cooperative, which sees local blueberries as the ideal healthy snack.

The Belgian cooperative announced the first sale of the year of local blueberries, produced by Albert and Maarten Royakkers of Kinrooi. These blueberries of the Duke variety were purchased by Fangio Winckels, head of Belgian fruit purchasing at Bouvry NV.

Global blueberry cultivation is increasing rapidly, but BelOrta pointed out that blueberries have been cultivated in Belgium for several decades.

"Its popularity is not surprising," said the cooperative. "We eat them at any time of the day: from breakfast to dinner, as a snack, but today we also use them in aperitifs and cocktails."

The Belgian cooperative stated that the healthy properties of blueberries, including their high content of minerals, antioxidants, vitamin K and fibre, make them the ideal snack.

“La combinazione di diverse varietà e di diversi sistemi di coltivazione consente di distribuire la produzione su un periodo più lungo”, ha dichiarato la cooperativa. “Grazie a questa distribuzione del raccolto, BelOrta può offrire deliziosi mirtilli da giugno fino all’inizio di novembre“.
