Blueberry production in a global context: challenges and agronomic strategies

21

As part of the Berry Area program at Macfrut 2025, scheduled from May 7th to 9th at the Rimini Expo Centre, Agr. Marco R. Butera will present a talk entitled “Blueberry Production in a Global Context: Challenges and Agronomic Strategies”.

In recent years, he has worked as a technical consultant in around ten countries across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, supporting berry producers and investors in the development, management, and technical optimization of cultivation projects across a wide range of climatic zones — from northern Europe to continental, Mediterranean, and desert regions.

The presentation will address the key challenges currently affecting the global blueberry industry, with a specific focus on the increasingly evident impact of climate change. Topics will include chill hour reduction, growing climatic unpredictability, pressure on water availability, and the direct implications for plant physiology and crop quality.

Through climate data, international case studies, and a field-based technical approach, the talk will offer fresh insights and alternative perspectives for the effective planning and management of blueberry operations, covering varietal selection, risk analysis, resource management, and logistics.
