Pasquini&Bini in the Berry Area at Macfrut: the berries market increasingly important

41

Innovation, quality, internationality, and efficiency: these are, for Piergiorgio Loperfido, CEO of Nuova Pasquini & Bini, the key elements that define the company's vision and market presence. For 50 years, it has been operating in the production of nursery containers.

A company that has evolved over time, in harmony with sector changes, expanding into new markets and sectors, such as berries.

“Pasquini & Bini has always been a benchmark in the industry. Being one of the first gave it a significant competitive advantage, allowing it to transform into a company with a strong international vocation,” explains Loperfido.

International expansion and new strategies

More than 50% of the revenue is currently generated abroad, across 60 countries on five continents. The company aims to further increase these numbers by strengthening its presence in some markets and entering new ones.

In an increasingly competitive market, with a significant rise in competitors, the company has responded by focusing on technologically advanced solutions and new products, increasingly tailored to specific production types.

Since 2021, it has been controlled by the EC I fund of Entangled Capital SGR and has recently acquired Centroplast Srl. At the end of 2023, a new production facility was inaugurated, nearly doubling production capacity.

Structural strengthening and new acquisitions

All these changes have led to further strengthening on both a structural and organizational level. “This,” says the CEO, “has allowed us to implement a series of projects aimed at further consolidating our market presence.”

In the coming months, the full integration of Centroplast, for example, will enable the company to expand its offering with smaller pots, a segment previously covered only marginally. A 70,000-square-meter logistics center ensures 12 million products are always in stock to meet even sudden demands.

In recent years, the berry sector, a rapidly growing market, has played an increasingly important role in the company’s strategies. This is why Pasquini & Bini will be present at the Berry Area, the Macfrut 2025 event dedicated to small fruits.

Innovation in the berry sector

“In the world of berries, there is great attention to the value that an innovative solution can generate. That is why further penetrating this sector is among our primary objectives,” explains Loperfido. “In this field, the right pot can provide a significant advantage in terms of productivity.”

As part of its business diversification strategy, the company has added specific solutions to its catalog over the past two years, also the result of continuous research with universities and specialized agronomists.

Among the innovations is Rubus, a line dedicated to raspberries that complements the existing blueberry line. “The innovative technical features result from extensive research that has identified the ideal configuration,” says Loperfido.

Sustainable materials and future projects

The first format has already been launched, with more to come throughout the year. Also planned are custom solutions for blackberries and square pots for blueberries.

All these innovations share the use of Infinity, a new-generation material introduced at the end of 2023 and now applied to the company’s most successful product lines, including those for berries.

The project, which has already achieved positive results in 2024, involves the use of recycled plastic sourced from Tetrapack recycling. “For over 20 years, we have been using regenerated plastics, which account for 95% of our production, but Infinity goes further: it is entirely recycled and recyclable,” explains Loperfido.

Sustainability and circular economy

Additionally, the presence of aluminum has a significant phytostimulant effect on plants and contributes, along with its distinctive light green color, to temperature control: differences of up to 12 degrees compared to a standard black pot have been observed.

Environmental sustainability is at the core of the company’s operations. One example is the circular economy project developed in collaboration with the nursery sector in Pistoia and Revet, a supplier of recycled raw materials.

Revet is responsible for recovering used pots from various companies and transforming them into new granules, which Pasquini & Bini will use to create new products to be reintroduced into the market. A completely closed-loop system where plastic is present but does not go to waste.

“Sustainability is a duty for those working with plastic. A world without it cannot exist, but we must ensure it is managed correctly,” concludes Loperfido.
