GreenWise blueberries recalled at Publix after 12 E. coli cases

One lot of GreenWise Organic IQF Blueberries, sold at Publix supermarkets in the United States, has been voluntarily recalled following reports of 12 E. coli infection cases.

The news was reported by Fox Business on July 6, 2026, and concerns a recall initiated by Chile-based supplier Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. on July 3, after reports of illnesses among consumers who had eaten the product. The recall was also published by Publix and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The affected product is exclusively a 10-ounce pack — approximately 283 grams — of GreenWise Organic IQF Blueberries, with lot 60401 and best-by date February 9, 2028. According to the authorities, no other lots or best-by dates are included in the recall.

The recalled blueberries were distributed to Publix stores in eight states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. Publix has urged customers to check their freezers and not to consume the product if purchased.

According to the FDA, the cases linked to the incident involve E. coli O145:H28 infections, with symptom onset recorded between May 11 and June 5, 2026. Health authorities have reported 12 confirmed cases, with illnesses reported in Florida and Georgia.

E. coli O145 belongs to the group of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli, microorganisms that can cause severe abdominal cramps, diarrhea that may be bloody, and vomiting. Most healthy people recover within about a week, but in vulnerable individuals — young children, older adults and immunocompromised people — the infection can develop into more serious complications, including hemolytic uremic syndrome.

Consumers who have the affected packages are advised not to eat the recalled blueberries. The product should be discarded or returned to the place of purchase for a refund. The FDA also recommends cleaning and sanitizing any surfaces, containers or freezers that may have come into contact with the product, in order to reduce the risk of cross-contamination.

The case concerns a specific lot of GreenWise-branded frozen product distributed through Publix, and at present does not indicate a generalized issue for the blueberry category.
