Fresh cranberries beyond Christmas: Fruit World’s proposal for the UK market

36

The commercial calendar for fresh cranberries can extend beyond Christmas. That is the view put forward by Fruit World International, which reports demand building earlier in autumn and interest continuing after the festive period. The press release does not quantify this trend, but identifies consumption occasions and alternatives to traditional Christmas cranberry sauce.

The first seasonal arrivals in the United Kingdom were on 14 October. Fruit World International, the exclusive UK importer of Habelman Bros fresh cranberries, estimates that its imports over the entire season represent more than 300 million individual berries.

From autumn events to everyday consumption

According to the importer, alongside sauce served with Christmas dishes, uses are gaining ground in baking, smoothies and drinks, breakfast bowls and savoury recipes. The fruit’s tart flavour and colour are the features the company is highlighting to encourage wider use.

The proposed calendar includes Halloween and US Thanksgiving ahead of the Christmas peak. Decorative applications are also envisaged: Halloween displays, colourful ice cubes and floating candle arrangements. These suggestions are aimed at retailers, wholesalers and foodservice operators seeking to broaden purchasing occasions during autumn.

Fresh fruit remains a niche in US production

The fresh market accounts for a small share of the industry. According to the Agricultural Marketing Resource Center figure cited in the press release, around 5% of cranberries produced in the United States are sold fresh. The remaining 95% are processed, primarily into juice and juice blends.

Habelman Bros operates in this niche. The family-owned Wisconsin business was established in 1907, directly oversees its growing and packing operations, and is described as the world’s largest fresh cranberry grower and packer.

Stevens and two formats for the UK market

The principal variety imported by Fruit World International is Stevens. The range includes bulk 10 kg packs for repacking into retailer formats and Habelman Bros branded 340 g polybags for wholesale and foodservice customers.

The two formats meet different needs: packing for retail distribution on one hand, and supplying operators using the fruit in seasonal dishes, drinks and accompaniments on the other.

Seasonal quality expectations

On the production side, favourable weather during flowering is reported, followed by a hailstorm that reduced yield. Subsequent improvements in weather conditions have led Fruit World International to anticipate good-quality fruit this season.

The importer’s commercial proposal is to introduce cranberries on shelves earlier and sustain interest after Christmas through a wider range of recipes and uses. Christmas remains the main reference point; extending the trading window is the opportunity the company aims to develop.
