From western Sicily (Italy) comes AgroBlu, a new brand of the Agrimediterranea group, with the aim of filling a still under-served market window: premium winter blueberries of Italian origin.
The project was launched in Mazara del Vallo (Trapani) and is part of a group that includes Spo Zentrum, Agro Blu, Agro Avo, Agrolatina and Agroyal.
“After decades in citrus, we want to enter the berries segment and engage with national retail chains,” explains Giacomo Rizzo, CEO of Spo Zentrum.
Rapid growth towards 100 hectares
2024 proved to be a turning point, with the entry of the Idea Agro fund (Dea Capital). Today, the total area stands at around 65 hectares (40 already planted), with the goal of reaching 100 hectares in the short term.
The key strength is seasonality: blueberries available from late December to May thanks to low-chill varieties suited to the Sicilian climate. This makes it possible to anticipate global players such as Peru, Chile and South Africa, offering a fresh product, hand-picked and packed locally.
AgroBlu focuses on a 100% Italian blueberry for the Italian consumer, in a market that is still young but growing. “Premium varieties ensure intense color, sizes above 18 mm, and a crunchy texture,” highlights Amanda Torchio (Spo Zentrum).
Fast logistics and positive early feedback
Distribution, managed by Spo Zentrum, has already reached retail chains since February, with deliveries within 12–24 hours. A competitive advantage that preserves freshness and quality, also supported by good shelf life.
In the medium term, AgroBlu aims to cover 20–30% of national consumption. The official debut is scheduled for Macfrut 2026, with communication activities and packaging featuring an informational QR code.
Impact on the territory also enhances the local community, with employment of local labor and flexible working arrangements. There is a strong female presence in harvesting operations, while initiatives to support families are being developed.
Outlook AgroBlu represents a strategic step to position Sicily as a hub for winter blueberries, combining varietal innovation, short supply chain, and a focus on the domestic market.
