Europe

The evolution of the southern hemisphere's blueberry market has gone through a decade of strong growth. To date, Southern Hemisphere exporters globally export 324,000 tonnes of blueberries with a total market value of $1.7 billion. This represents about 43% of global exports of blueberries. With a market value of USD 618 million, the EU-27 comprises about 1/3 of the southern hemisphere's blueberries export markets, with most of the fruit entering Germany (22%) or through the Dutch trading hub (64%) and distributed throughout Europe. Exports of blueberries SHAFFE to the EU have grown at an average annual rate of 28%.

Italy

The Italian import market of blueberries has developed with an average annual growth rate of 11% over the last decade, reaching a market value of $43 million, mainly deriving from intra-European trade. Despite this positive market development, southern hemisphere exporters have not yet benefited from this growth trend in the Italian market - reinforced by the difficult Covid-19 trade conditions throughout 2020.

MACFRUT 2021 will be an excellent opportunity to analyse market opportunities and challenges for Southern Hemisphere exporters in the Italian berries market - from logistics to market developments.
